That old timer's advice about thinning shears nearly cost me a client
Last month I had this guy come in who wanted a really textured crop, and my coworker Rick told me to NEVER use thinning shears because they "ruin the integrity of the hair." So I did the whole cut with just point cutting and scissors. Looked okay at first but after a week he came back complaining it grew out super bulky and uneven. Turns out Rick was wrong for THIS hair type - his texture needed some thinning to blend it right. Has anyone else had an old-school barber give you advice that just doesn't work on certain hair?

Learned that same lesson the hard way with my own hair once. Rick probably meant well but thinning shears aren't evil, they just need the right situation. Now I keep a pair handy for those clients who need that soft blend.

Oh man, I feel for you. Have you ever had that moment where you trusted someone else's advice and it just backfired completely? It's a lousy feeling, especially when a client comes back unhappy. In my experience, thinning shears are like any tool in the kit, they're not good or bad on their own, it's all about the hair type and what you're trying to do. Your coworker Rick probably learned that rule from some old school barber and just passed it down without thinking about different textures. I've definitely been there where I followed a hard and fast rule and later realized it just doesn't apply to everyone. Take it as a learning moment, now you know what works for that texture and you can trust your own eye more next time.
