Stumbled on a stat yesterday that barbershops here in Phoenix charge 30% less than Denver for the same cut
I was looking at some cost of living numbers between cities because I'm thinking about moving. But what caught me was the haircut price difference. Same fade, same level of shop. Denver average is $45-50. Phoenix average is $30-35. That's a solid $15 difference per head. Makes me wonder if our local prices are actually too low or if Denver is just inflated for no reason. Anyone else notice their city is on the low end compared to others?

Whoa, hold up. I have to push back on this one hard. In my experience, paying less for a haircut in Phoenix isn't a good sign, it's a red flag. You get what you pay for, and that $15 gap probably means Denver barbers are actually paying their rent and making a living wage while Phoenix barbers are being squeezed. There's no way a shop in a comparable city can charge that much less without cutting corners somewhere. Take this with a grain of salt, but I'd bet those cheaper Phoenix cuts are from places with high turnover and less experienced barbers who don't stick around. Your mileage may vary, but I'd rather pay $45 for a barber who's been doing it ten years than $30 for a new guy every six months.

Yeah actually you kinda got me there. I used to be all in on the whole "Phoenix is cheaper for everything" thing and thought it was just a better deal. But you're right, that $15 gap is pretty big for two cities that aren't that different cost wise. I never really thought about what that difference might be covering on the Denver end. It makes sense that the higher price could mean the barber is actually getting paid enough to stick around and build a career. I've definitely had my share of mediocre cuts from places where the stylist was gone three months later. Kinda changes how I see the whole price comparison thing now.
