Rant: I stopped using the same guard sizes for every haircut after 12 years

I used to swear by the #4 on top and #2 on the sides for pretty much every client. Then about 6 months ago a guy came in with really coarse hair and that combo left him looking like a hedge. Now I eyeball the length first and start a full size up or down based on what I see. It adds maybe 2 minutes but the blend is way better. Any other barbers here adjust their guard picks based on hair texture instead of sticking to the usual sizes?
