Question about cleaning oxidized clippers without damaging the blades
I was scrubbing one of my Wahl clippers last Tuesday with some cleaner I found under the sink, and next thing I know the blades started rusting on me three days later. What do you guys use to get the gunk off without wrecking the finish?

So you grabbed some random cleaner from under the sink? That's kinda asking for trouble. Most all-purpose sprays have stuff in them that eats right through the coating on clipper blades. Just use straight isopropyl alcohol with a stiff toothbrush, that's all you need. The rust is from whatever chemical was in that cleaner reacting with the metal, not from the scrubbing itself. Stick to 70% or 91% alcohol on a rag, wipe them dry right after, and oil them before you put them away.

Read somewhere that even some "natural" cleaners like vinegar or lemon juice can mess up the coating on blades because they're acidic. People think they're safe but they're not. Same thing with bleach based sprays, those will definitely cause rust spots if you don't rinse them off fast enough. I've been using 91% isopropyl for years now and never had a single rust issue. Just make sure you get the cheap stuff without any added moisturizers or scents. And yeah, what you said about oiling them after is key too.
