My clipper cord ate itself mid-fade on a guy in Phoenix

I was two thirds through a skin fade when the cord shorted out and started smoking, so I yanked it and finished with trimmers held together by a rubber band for the last 15 minutes. Has anyone else had a tool crap out at the worst possible second, or am I just cursed with bad luck?
