I was team clippers-only for 5 years, just switched to shears and I get it now
I used to think shears were just for old school barbers who refused to adapt. But then I watched a guy at a shop in Dallas clean up a kids curly top with nothing but shears and thinning scissors. He was done in 8 minutes and the texture was way better than anything I ever did with clippers. I tried it myself on my last 3 clients and the difference is real for curly hair especially. I still use clippers for fades but I'm not gonna lie, I was wrong about shears. Any other barbers here change their mind on a tool after swearing it off for years?

My buddy ran a shop in Austin for 12 years and swore by clippers for everything. He got talked into trying shears on a kid with tight coils and said it changed his whole approach in about 5 minutes. Now he keeps a pair just for those textured cuts and admits he was being stubborn for way too long.

Man, that's a good story. Did he have to change his whole routine for sanitizing and maintaining the shears compared to clippers, or was it easier than he figured? I've always wondered if barbers who switch over realize how much more often you gotta sharpen those things.
