Hot take: I stopped using a straight razor for necklines last winter and my work got better

For like 8 years, I was a straight razor purist for cleaning up the neck and sideburns, thought it was the only 'real' way. Then in December, I had a guy with super sensitive skin in my chair in Austin and the razor left him red for days. I switched to a guarded trimmer set to a zero gap, just for that final crisp line. The control is insane and I get zero complaints now. Anyone else make a switch from a classic tool that actually improved their results?

Honestly, same. I switched to a zero-gapped trimmer for necklines last year and it's way more forgiving on sensitive skin. The line is just as sharp without the irritation.

Yeah, and here I was thinking a straight razor was some kind of badge of honor. Guess @the_harper and I both learned that the right tool is just the one that works best, not the one that looks cool. Who knew being less of a purist could make you better at your job?

It's rough when you put all this effort into mastering something because everyone says it's the "right" way, only to find out it's just making things harder. I had a similar thing happen with my clippers last year, I was so set on using a certain brand because all the old-timers swore by it. Switching to something that actually worked with my hand was like a weight off my shoulders, felt like I could finally stop fighting my tools and just do the job.
