Appreciation post: the old barber's trick that fixed my clipper burnout
Ran my own shop for 8 years now and I kept fighting the same issue. Clippers dying mid-fade, motor getting hot, having to stop and swap tools in the middle of a cut. Tried oiling more, cleaning more, even bought a new cordless pair that cost me $180. Still had the problem.
Then a retired barber named Sal came in for a trim and watched me struggle. He said "you're holding them too tight, kid. Let the machine do the work." I laughed it off but he showed me his old method. He rests the clipper on his pinky and thumb, light grip, and lets the blade glide instead of pressing down. Took me about 2 weeks to unlearn my death grip, but my clippers stopped overheating and my hand stopped cramping by 3 PM.
Anyone else pick up a habit like that from an older guy in the shop, something that seems too simple to matter?

Oh, I have to push back on this one. I tried that whole loose grip thing for a month after a guy swore by it, and my cuts got sloppier, plain and simple. You need a certain amount of pressure to keep the blade flat on the skin, especially on a thick fade line. My clippers never overheated because of my grip, they overheated because I was working them too long without letting them cool down. Sounds like you found what works for you, but I wouldn't tell a new barber to drop their firm hold just because some old timer says so. Different hands, different results.
