My sourdough starter took a weird turn after week 3

I've been keeping this starter alive for 45 days now, fed it every morning without fail. Around day 20 it got this strong acetone smell that filled up my whole kitchen near Chicago. Turns out I was starving it by not feeding it twice a day once it got active. Has anyone else dealt with that funky smell phase?

Oh yeah the acetone smell phase is totally a thing! Mine was around day 18 and I thought I killed it or something. That smell is so strong it made my eyes water and my husband asked if I was making nail polish remover in the kitchen. I started doing two feedings a day like you said and it went away after about 4 days completely. Now my starter smells more like yogurt and a little bit of fruit which is way more pleasant for sure.

Tbh the acetone phase scared me too, mine smelled like a science fair.
