Is it really a fail if the cake tastes great but looks terrible?

I see people on here trashing perfectly good cakes just because they sank in the middle or cracked on top. But my last chocolate cake looked like a crater and still got rave reviews at the party because the flavor was spot on. Does visual perfection actually matter more than taste in baking?

See what Felix said isn't quite right though... professional baking competitions are a whole different world than what most of us are doing at home. For a party or a family dinner, taste absolutely wins over looks every single time. The whole point of baking for regular people is to enjoy it, not to stress over some crack in the top.

Ask any professional baker if looks matter in competition. They definitely do.
