Burned $35 on a fancy silicone mat that melted on my cookie sheet
I saw this expensive silicone baking mat at the store and thought it would be a game changer... no more parchment paper waste, right? Got it home, put it on a standard cookie sheet, and slid it into the oven at 400 degrees for some chocolate chip cookies. Ten minutes later the kitchen smelled like burning rubber and the mat was all bubbled up and stuck to the pan. Turns out my cheap cookie sheet couldn't handle the heat distribution and the mat just gave out... Has anyone else had a silicone mat fail like this or did I just buy a dud?

Wait, 400 degrees melted it? Most silicone mats are only rated up to 425 at best, so that cheap pan must have been way hotter than that.

Changed my mind after reading your post honestly. I always figured silicone mats were basically indestructible, but that cheap pan clearly transfered way more heat than expected. Makes me think those temperature ratings are barely covering normal ovens, never mind a hot metal tray.
