Am I the only one who bought a $40 'artisan' sourdough starter kit online that was just dead flour paste?

I mean, I followed the instructions for a week and got nothing, so maybe just ask a local bakery for a scrap of theirs instead.

Honestly that starter might not be dead, just super dormant. Tbh they can take way longer than a week to wake up sometimes.

Wait, has anyone else had a starter take almost 3 weeks? I used to think if it wasn't active after a week it was toast. But then I left mine alone while I went on vacation. Came back and it was suddenly alive. @gavin928 is right, these things are stubborn. Threw out a perfectly good one back in January cause I gave up too soon.

Totally agree, mine looked like a brick of clay for almost two weeks once. I kept feeding it on schedule, feeling pretty hopeless. Then one morning it was finally bubbly and had that sweet smell. Patience is the hardest part of sourdough for sure.
