Spent 3 hours trying to find why my sourdough wasn't rising

I made a new starter batch last week and it just sat there like a pancake for days. Turned out I was using water straight from the tap in a new town with heavy chlorine. Took me way too long to realize I needed to let the water sit out for an hour first. Anyone else had a dumb water issue mess with their bake?

Blame the tap water all you want but I've been using straight tap water for years in three different cities without any problems. My starter actually perks up faster with the unfiltered stuff. Had a neighbor who insisted on bottled water and her loaves came out flat every time. Maybe the issue is your starter just needed more time to get established or your kitchen is too cold. A lot of people look for excuses when patience is really what they need.

And here I was blaming my starter when it was just tap water all along, right?
