PSA: My stand mixer started smoking halfway through a 10 pound batch of dough yesterday

Turns out the grease in the gears had completely dried up after 8 years of heavy use and I had to spend 3 hours taking it apart to clean and re-lube it, anyone else ever dealt with a mixer locking up like that?

Oh man that reminds me of when my sewing machine started sounding like a dying cat after years of heavy quilting. I didn't even think about grease till a friend told me to check the manual. I spent a whole weekend taking it apart and using a little tube of industrial grease I found at a craft store. Worked like a charm after that but the smell of old grease still grosses me out.

Bet that old grease probably turned into glue over time too. When I worked on an old motorcycle engine we had the same problem - dried up grease basically baked into a solid chunk and locked everything up. A good soak in penetrating oil mighta saved you some elbow grease next time.
