Hit 400 loaves on my starter this month and did the math on what it costs me
A 50 lb bag of flour runs me $28 at Restaurant Depot in Baltimore and I go through one every 9 days, so after 400 loaves I'm still not sure if the farmers market stall is actually paying for itself or just paying for itself in a way that feels nice, anyone else keep a spreadsheet on this stuff?
A spreadsheet would just be a fancy way of watching myself lose money in real time. My flour math looks the same as yours, one 50 lb bag every week and a half, and by the time I add in butter, salt, and the gas to drive to the market I'm basically baking for the joy of it. Last month I finally wrote it all down and the stall cleared about $40, which is less than what I tipped the kid who helps me load the car. So no, you're not alone, we're just both running a very expensive hobby with a business license.
