Flat bread disaster: yeast age or water heat to blame?

I messed up a loaf thinking old yeast was the problem, but my pal claims it's all about water being too hot. Which one do you think messes things up more?

Seriously, can we all just calm down about water temp? @leoscott has a point with the cheap thermometer, but I've used lukewarm tap water and ancient yeast and still got something edible. People make this sound like rocket science.

My garage fridge runs cold and I once killed three packets of yeast before realizing it was basically a freezer. Now I proof everything on the counter because trusting that old thermometer is a recipe for hockey pucks. Room temp for the win.
