Why do people hate on the check engine light in dashboards? It saved me $600 in Tucson
Every design forum I read says a check engine light is lazy design because it gives you zero info, just a vague glowing symbol. But last month my 2013 Civic lit up on I-10 outside Tucson and that dumb little orange engine saved me. I grabbed my $25 code reader from the glove box, got a P0420, and a shop down the road fixed a bad O2 sensor for $180 instead of the $800 cat replacement another place quoted me. Sometimes a simple warning beats a screen full of jargon. Has anyone else actually had one of these "bad" designs bail them out?
Honestly, that little light is doing exactly what it's supposed to do, it gets you to check things before they get worse. A vague warning still beats no warning at all, and like you said, a cheap reader turns that vague light into a real answer. Turning your nose up at it feels like hating a smoke alarm for not telling you which room is on fire.
