The elevator panel in my office building has buttons on BOTH sides of the door but only one set works
So I work on the 6th floor of this building in Portland and for like 3 months I kept hitting the down button on the right side of the door and nothing happened, I figured the button was just dead. Turned out the left side is the only one wired up, and the right side is literally just there for looks, same exact buttons, same little light, completely fake. I watched a guy in a suit press the right button 11 times in a row yesterday and just stand there getting madder and madder. Whoever designed this decided symmetry mattered more than a working button, and I need to know if other buildings pull this same trick because now I'm suspicious of every elevator I get in.
Check the little panel above the buttons next time, some buildings label which side is live or just kill the power to the fake set. If maintenance won't fix it you could slap a piece of tape over the dead one, works better than watching guys rage press it.
