That stair rail I copied from Pinterest had a 4 inch gap

My neighbor in Austin pointed out the handrail I built was too far from the wall for kids, and the code sheet online said 1.5 to 4 inches max. I measured mine at 6.5 and spent last Sunday redoing it. Anyone else trust a photo over a spec sheet once and regret it?
