My old resume format got roasted by a hiring manager in 10 seconds flat

I used to cram everything into a two-column grid with icons and colored sections. A hiring manager at a tech company told me it was impossible to scan and that most ATS systems would just spit out gibberish. I switched to a simple single-column layout with clear headers and no graphics. Now my resume actually gets past the bots and people can find my skills in under 5 seconds. Has anyone else gotten brutal feedback that totally changed how you layout your work stuff?

That "10 seconds flat" line hits hard because it's the same way we treat everything now. I noticed the trend goes way beyond resumes. People scan phone menus at restaurants the same way, they skip anything with too many words or weird fonts. It's like our brains got rewired to reject anything that takes more than a glance to understand. Simple single column layouts work because they match how we actually read stuff on screens now, quickly and top to bottom.
