My old boss said my parking signs were 'too clear' so I dumbed them down, was he right?
I make signs for a small shop outside Des Moines and a few years back my boss kept telling me the lot signs I made were too busy. He said people drive by at 15 mph and in the rain, so I cut my arrows from 3 down to 1 and dropped a whole line of text. Now half the folks pull in the exit lane and honk at each other. But here is the other side. When I had the full signs with the arrows and the little rules, people still went the wrong way, they just felt smarter doing it. So is a sign bad design when it looks messy, or when it does not stop the mistake? I really want to know which way you all lean on this.
