Had to pick between that $8 Ikea shelf or a vintage wooden crate last week
I went with the crate because it was $3 at a flea market but now my books are all crooked because nothing is level. Anyone else regret chasing a cheap aesthetic over something that actually works?

Read an article a while back about how old crates used standard sizes but nothing was ever truly square. They were built for shipping not displaying stuff. That's why your books lean and mine threaten to crush my cat. The vintage look is just straight up poor craftsmanship by modern standards. But hey we bought the story not the function I guess. My new rule is if it can't sit level on my kitchen counter it doesn't come home. Learned that lesson after my third near avalanche.

My $3 crate is currently held up by a stack of old phone books on one side and a wadded up sock on the other. The books have that "charming vintage lean" which is just a polite way of saying "about to avalanche onto my cat." Always gotta pay the crooked tax when you go for the cheap look, huh?
