Just realized I was overthinking my invoice layout this whole time
I used to build invoices with this fancy multi-column grid, color coded sections, the works. Looked great on my screen but clients kept emailing back asking what line item was what. Last month a customer in Toledo literally called me to ask which charge was for the rodent exclusion versus the follow up bait stations. I switched to a single column layout with bold labels and plain numbers, zero color. Guess what, nobody has asked a single question since. That took me about an hour to set up and I had been fighting with the fancy version for two years. It made me realize the design was for me, not for the person reading it. Has anyone else had a similar moment where simpler just worked better for their actual customers?
The "design was for me, not the reader" line hit home. My buddy ran a handyman gig and spent weeks on a fancy app layout, then switched to a text list and his repeat customers stopped asking which job was which.
