Appreciation post: I thought the 3am squint trick for checking kerning was total nonsense until I tried it on my client's logo
Spent 2 hours nudging the same two letters in the word 'BROOKLYN' before someone in a type forum told me to blur my eyes and squint at the whole thing from across the room, and the bad gap jumped out in literally 2 seconds, so now I owe that random internet stranger a coffee.
Who knew stepping back and looking at the whole thing like a blurry mess would actually work? I used to roll my eyes at that squint tip, thought it was just some designer myth people repeat to sound smart. Then I caught a bad gap in a label I was working on, nothing as cool as a logo, just a simple word, and the squint made it pop like crazy. Two minutes of blurry eyes beat two hours of zooming in and dragging letters around. Now it's the first thing I do before I even touch the spacing.
