A client in Phoenix asked me why our smart home app had 14 icons on one screen, and I did not have a good answer
I built that dashboard over 6 months and just kept adding tiles whenever someone asked for a feature. Lights. Shades. Temp. Scenes. Security. Energy. Music. Doorbell. Camera. Air. Sprinklers. Locks. Garage. Pool. Fourteen. And I thought it looked fine because I knew where everything was.
She pulled out her phone at the walkthrough and said her 72 year old mom would use this while holding a grocery bag in one hand. That one sentence did more to my thinking than a year of reading design blogs.
So what do you all do when a client hands you a mirror like that? Do you start over or try to hide things behind a settings menu? I am leaning toward a favorites row and burying the rest, but I do not want to lose the power users. Any of you been through a redo like this?
