The neighbor's comment about my drum room still bugs me, 2 years later

I spent 6 months building out a 10x12 shed into a practice space, treating the walls with 4 inch rockwool panels and double layered drywall. My neighbor Mike walked by one Saturday while I was testing a mix and said, 'Sounds like you're playing through a blanket.' That one comment sent me down a rabbit hole. I measured my room with a cheap REW mic and found a nasty 60Hz standing wave I'd missed completely. Two bass traps in the corners later, it's night and day, but I still hear his voice every time I hit the kick. Has anyone else gotten a random criticism that turned out to be the best studio advice you ever ignored at first?
