Soundproof math shocked me: a 6 dB drop needs 4x the mass?

I started reading about mass loaded vinyl for my shed studio and found a chart saying each 6 dB of extra blocking means doubling the surface density twice. So we're talking 4 layers of drywall to beat a bus driving by, not one. Has anyone actually hit real quiet without building a room inside a room, or is that figure just marketing fluff?
