Ripped my whole mixing setup apart after a stranger roasted my low end

Some guy on a feedback forum told me my bass was muddy and loose, basically just a wash of low frequencies. I thought my room treatment was fine but he pointed out my monitors were too close to the back wall in my 10x12 shed studio. Took me an afternoon to move my desk 2 feet forward and throw up some absorption panels behind the speakers. The difference was insane, my mixes actually had punch instead of that flabby mess. I used to just crank the subwoofer to compensate and it was killing my ears. Now I spend way less time EQing and the low end actually translates to my car and earbuds. Has anyone else realized their $300 foam panels were doing nothing compared to proper placement?

Buddy of mine did the same thing and swore it fixed everything overnight.

Placebo effect is real when you actually believe something's gonna work, but that doesn't make it useless. Sometimes the confidence boost alone changes your habits enough to feel results.
