Rant: My DIY vocal booth idea totally backfired at a friend's place

I was at my buddy Mike's house in Portland last weekend recording some vocals for his band. He had this massive PVC frame with moving blankets draped over it, and I thought it looked janky so I suggested we build something nicer out of MDF. We spent $80 on wood and acoustic foam but the whole thing sounded boxy and dead, like recording in a closet. Has anyone else tried building a portable booth and just ended up wasting cash on the wrong materials?

One buddy of mine used his mattress as a booth and it worked way better than your MDF idea.

Man I did the same thing with old couch cushions once, sounded like I was recording from inside a shoebox.
