My neighbor's studio fire taught me about battery storage the hard way

I mean, I always thought I was pretty careful with my little recording setup in the shed. Last month my neighbor two houses down lost his whole studio to a lithium battery fire, and the fire marshal told us it started from a power bank that was sitting on a shelf in direct sun for like a year. Apparently those batteries can swell and then just go, even if they're not plugged in. I checked my own gear after that and found two of my spare batteries had bulged on the bottom, I never would've looked if he hadn't mentioned it. He had about $3,000 in gear and it all went because he stored them in a metal ammo box that actually trapped the heat. So now I keep mine in a ceramic bowl with sand in a shaded corner, and I check the shapes every month. Has anyone else dealt with battery swelling in their studio setup, and what do you do for safe storage that actually works?
