My buddy swore foam panels would fix my drum room, he was half right

Last spring I set up a 10x12 studio in my garage in Dayton and my friend Mike, who records vocals for a living, told me to skip the expensive bass traps and just cover every wall with 2 inch foam. I did exactly that, about $180 worth, and the high end got dead but the low end turned into this muddy boom that made every kick drum sound like a trash can. I finally rented a measurement mic for 40 bucks and saw a huge spike around 80Hz that foam does nothing for. Now I'm looking at building some corner traps from rockwool, does anyone have a simple plan that actually works for a small room?
