I put a window in the wrong wall of my backyard studio and it turned out great
I was building my 10x12 foot studio in my yard and I had this plan from a book. It said to put the main window on the north wall for even light. But when I framed it up, I realized the view from the south wall was way better, looking into my garden. I went against the plan and put the big window there instead. For a week I was sure I messed up, thinking about glare and heat. But now, working in there every morning, the sun comes in soft and warm and I get to watch the birds. It just feels right in a way the plan never did. I guess sometimes you have to build for your own spot, not the book. Has anyone else put a window in a 'wrong' place and been happy about it?

Honestly, that line about building for your own spot and not the book really hits home. I see this all the time with recipes. You follow it exactly, but then you realize your family hates cilantro or loves more garlic. Tbh the best meals happen when you toss the recipe and just cook for the people at your table. It's like your window, the plan can't know your actual life.

But what if you're just a bad cook who needs that recipe to not ruin dinner?

My first Thanksgiving turkey was so dry we had to serve it with gravy soup. I clung to that recipe like a life raft, but it turns out the recipe writer's oven and my old apartment oven were two very different beasts. Now I just poke the bird with a thermometer and call it good. Sometimes the best cooking tool is knowing when to ignore the instructions and trust your own gut, even if your gut has a history of kitchen fires.
