Hit 40 decibels at 11pm and realized my shed studio finally works
I built a 10x12 shed studio in my backyard in Portland last year and I've been fighting noise complaints from my neighbor ever since. Last Thursday I finally got a sound meter app and tested it at 11pm with my monitors at normal volume, and the reading from the fence line was 40 decibels. That's about the same as a quiet library. I stood there for like five minutes just watching the number not move. The fix wasn't anything fancy, just a second layer of drywall with Green Glue between the sheets plus a solid core door I found at a ReStore for $60. My neighbor came out while I was standing there and said he couldn't hear anything at all. Two months ago he was texting me at midnight about bass. If you're building a backyard studio and skipping the double drywall to save money, I honestly think you're wasting the whole build. What decibel reading did you get at your property line, and did you test it at night or during the day?
