Found out my backyard studio's walls were basically just holding paint, not sound

I was reading through a forum post on soundproofing last night and came across a comment about how most people miss the mass layer in their walls. I looked at my setup and realized I just used regular plywood and insulation, but nothing with real heft. Turns out adding a second layer of 5/8 drywall could drop noise transfer by like 10 decibels. Has anyone here doubled up their drywall and noticed a big difference for like $100 extra in materials?

Funny you mention that, I did the exact same thing with my garage last year (well, it was supposed to be a practice space for my band). I put up all this fancy acoustic foam and thought I was golden, but the neighbors were still pounding on the wall during our first jam session. So I went back and added that second layer of drywall with some Green Glue between them, and man, it was like night and day. Suddenly I could crank my amp without getting dirty looks from the guy next door, though my wife still complains about the low end rumbling through the house.
