Dude told me my vocal booth was killing my recordings and he was right

Had a buddy who runs a studio come over to check my backyard setup. He listened to a mix and said my room sounds dead and lifeless. Pointed out I had too much foam in my booth killing all the natural reflections. Took half of it down and added some diffuser panels I built from scrap wood. Now my vocals actually have some air and space around them. Anyone else get told their treatment was overdone?

Oh yeah, I've been there. Took me like two years to figure out my first treated room was basically a vocal coffin. Too much foam kills the high end and leaves you with this weird boxy low mid thing that's a nightmare to mix later. You're on the right track pulling that stuff down. I keep it real simple now - just hit the first reflection points, treat the corners for bass, and leave the rest alone. That natural room sound adds way more character than you think, even in a small space.
