Am I the only one who stopped using acoustic panels and went back to heavy blankets?
I lined my whole studio with those foam acoustic panels back in 2019, spent like $400 on them from a place in Phoenix... but after a year I realized the room still sounded dead and boxy on recordings. Swapped them out for thick moving blankets I got for $30 total, and now my vocals actually have some life in them without weird echoes. Has anyone else found that cheap stuff works better than the fancy gear?

Oh man, I gotta disagree with you there! I've tried both and those cheap blankets just suck all the high end out of my room in a really uneven way. The foam panels might be pricey but when I put them up in a proper pattern (not just covering every wall) my mix translations got way better. Moving blankets made everything sound like I was recording in a closet.

The thing with foam panels is they mostly just kill the high mids and highs. They don't do much for lower frequencies so your room might sound dead but you're still getting bass buildup that messes with your mixes.
