The day my neighbor's spreader showed me I'd been fertilizing wrong for a decade

I was helping him reseed his backyard last spring and he just casually set his spreader to a different setting than I'd always used. Turns out I'd been putting down twice the recommended amount of fertilizer all those years - no wonder my lawn looked burnt every August. Anybody else ever realize they've been doing something basic wrong that long?

Honestly, my buddy was an irrigation contractor for like five years before he realized he'd been mowing his own lawn wrong the whole time. He was scalping it down to nothing every week thinking that was how you got it thick, turns out his grass type needed to stay way taller. Took him a decade and a half of patchy turf to figure out something the lawn care manual probably would've told him in five minutes.

Your buddy ever try explaining to his wife that he's a pro at watering other people's lawns but can't figure out his own? That's pretty funny honestly. @sullivan.john I feel his pain though. I spent a whole summer killing grubs in my yard with the wrong pesticide because I didn't read the label. Just dumped it on and wondered why the spots got bigger. Sometimes you get too comfortable with one thing and forget the basics apply to you too. We all have that one blind spot where common sense just checks out for a while.
