I put a $180 "smart" garage door opener on my old door and the thing ate my Saturday
My garage door is a 1994 Genie chain drive, nothing special, and it worked fine with the plain wall button. Last month I grabbed one of those wifi openers at a Home Depot in Fort Worth because it was on the clearance rack for $180 and I figured I could open the door from my phone. Three Saturdays later I had it wired up, and the sensor bracket kept tripping the safety beam every time the sun hit the door at 4pm, so the door would just stop halfway and sit there. I also found out the app pings the cloud every 30 seconds, which means if my wifi drops, the door freezes in whatever spot it's in. I finally ripped it out, put the old button back, and I'm out $180 plus a drill bit I snapped. If your opener is older than you are, the smart stuff is mostly fighting a door that was never built to listen. Has anyone gotten one of these working on a chain drive without it acting up every afternoon?
