I finally dug up my old push mower after 3 years of using a gas one
My neighbor Mark stopped me last weekend while I was fighting with the pull cord on my Toro and said I was wasting my time - that reel mowers cut cleaner and take less maintenance. He showed me his lawn after using a $60 manual mower for two summers and the stripes were perfect, not a single brown tip. I'm sitting here looking at my shed with both mowers inside, so which way do you lean - gas convenience or manual simplicity for a small backyard?

The first time I pushed my old reel mower after switching back I was shocked at how quiet it was, no earplugs needed. Mark is right about the cleaner cut too, a reel mower snips the grass like scissors while a gas one just tears it, which is why you see more brown edges with gas. For a small backyard I think the manual is the way to go, unless you let the grass get really tall sometimes.

That "cut cleaner" bit is what got me, I thought gas was better till I tried a neighbors reel mower.
