Tried the 'shortcut' over the ridge on the Timberline Loop last weekend and ended up bushwhacking for two hours in the rain.

Wait, so the game trail doesn't actually connect? How do you even tell it's an animal trail and not just a faded hiker path? I've definitely been fooled by those before.

That "shortcut" is just a game trail. The real trail switchbacks down to the creek about a quarter mile west.
