Spent $80 on a paper map set for the Wind River Range and it was the best call I made all trip.

My old Garmin died on day three of a John Muir Trail section hike last year. I had a backup paper map but I was still mad about it. Now I always carry both, but I find myself looking at the paper one first. It forces you to actually learn the land instead of just following a dot. Batteries are a single point of failure you just can't afford in the backcountry.

Paper maps make you see the land, not just your route.

Best call I made all trip" is so real. My buddy got a paper map for the Beartooths after his phone died from the cold. He said just having that big sheet to spread out at camp, seeing the whole picture, it changed the route for them. They found a lake that wasn't even on their digital map. Makes you wonder if we rely on batteries too much.
