Spent $340 on a quilt instead of a bag for the Wonderland Trail and I'm still not sure how I feel
I did the Wonderland Trail in Mount Rainier last August, 93 miles over 10 days, and right before the trip I dropped $340 on a 20 degree quilt setup instead of just bringing my old 3 pound synthetic bag. The bag weighed almost 3 pounds and packed down to the size of a basketball, and the quilt came in at 22 ounces and squished into a football sized stuff sack. That weight savings sounded huge in my head, and for the first 6 nights I was loving it, sleeping fine down into the high 30s with just a beanie and my puffy. Then night 7 near Sunrise it hit 29 degrees and I woke up at 2am shivering because the pad straps let cold air sneak in along my side every time I rolled over. I ended up wearing every layer I had plus wrapping my rain jacket around my feet, which is not what you want after a 12 mile day. Looking back, the quilt was great for weight and pack space but the draft issue almost wrecked the last third of the trip. Has anyone found a strap setup that actually keeps a quilt sealed up on a wide pad, or do you just accept the drafts and bring a warmer pad?
