Serious question about how you pack your bear canister

I used to just throw everything in my bear canister haphazardly until a ranger at Yosemite told me I was wasting like 30% of the space. Now I Tetris everything in there tight. Anybody else have a moment where you found out you were doing a basic backpacking thing totally wrong?

Learned the hard way when my canister wouldn't shut after shoving one too many granola bars in there.

My buddy Mike did the same thing with one of those old metal canisters, except it was those big soft pretzel nuggets from Costco. He kept shoving them in there till the lid would barely twist on, then one day he went to open it and the whole thing just burst open like a popcorn kernel. Pretzel pieces went flying across his whole kitchen, even found one behind his fridge two weeks later.
