My $40 bear canister rental felt like a waste until I saw the claw marks

I almost skipped it on a short trip in the Sierra last month to save weight. Woke up to a huge mess at a nearby camp where someone's food bag got shredded. Anyone have a go-to lightweight bear hang method that actually works for those areas?

Just rent the canister, it's cheaper than a new tent.

Renting a canister is for the stove, not the tent.

Claw marks" yeah that'll do it. I was one of those guys who swore by bear hangs and thought canisters were just extra weight, dragged one up to Yosemite on a whim a few years back and sure enough found a tree with gashes right at head height the next morning. Totally changed my thinking, now I just rent one for anything in high bear activity zones and don't even bother with the rope.
