Just found out the Appalachian Trail is 2,198 miles and I planned for 2,180, so my whole food math was off
I was mapping out my resupply stops for a thru hike starting in April when I looked at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy site and saw the official length is 2,198 miles. I had been using 2,180 because that number is in an old guidebook I bought at a used gear shop in Asheville. That 18 mile gap does not sound like much until you do the math on 6 days of food at 4,000 calories a day. I had to redo every single resupply window and add one more stop in Virginia. Now I am second guessing every other number I pulled from that book, like elevation gain and shelter distances. Has anyone else found the official trail mileage does not match what the guides say, and which number do you plan around?
