I tried hiking the same 12 mile loop in boots and in trail runners and got two totally different results
Last month I did the Eagle Creek loop out near Hood River twice in two weekends, same 12 miles and about 2,800 feet of climb, just to settle a bet with myself. First trip I wore my old leather boots that I have had for 4 seasons. Second trip I wore a pair of trail runners I grabbed on sale for $70. I expected the boots to win on the rocky parts and the runners to win everywhere else. What actually happened is my feet hurt way worse in the boots, but my ankles felt beat up in the runners on the downhill. I also noticed I moved faster in the runners by about 25 minutes, but I was more tired at the end because I was watching every single step. Now I keep going back and forth on which one is really better for long days. Some folks say support matters more than weight, others say light and fast is the only way. So which side are you on for a route like that?
