I spent $180 on a 'ultralight' backpacking pillow in Denver and it popped on night one in Rocky Mountain National Park
I want to warn anyone thinking about buying a fancy inflatable pillow for backpacking trips. Last month I dropped $180 at a shop in Denver on one of those ultralight pillows that weighs almost nothing and packs down to the size of a fist. I took it on a three night loop in Rocky Mountain National Park and it sprung a leak the very first night around 2am. I woke up with my head on a rock and a flat piece of rubber next to me. I patched it with the included sticker the next morning but it leaked again by night two. For that kind of money I could have bought a decent fleece and just stuffed it in my stuff sack. Has anyone found a pillow setup that actually survives more than two nights out?
The thing nobody talks about is how cold makes the plastic stiff and brittle. That first night in the Rockies probably dropped below freezing, and those thin pillow shells are not made for that. My fix has been a dry bag half filled with air and wrapped in whatever shirt I wore that day, weighs nothing extra since I already carry both.
