Hot take: The JMT is overrated and I'll take the Wind River Range any day
I did my first JMT thru-hike in 2018 and thought it was amazing. Then I spent 10 days in the Winds last August and it totally changed my mind. The JMT has way too many people (saw 50+ hikers in one afternoon near Muir Pass) and the permits are a nightmare. Wind River Range? I went 4 days without seeing another soul near Titcomb Basin. The scenery is just as good too - maybe better because the peaks feel closer. What's the deal with everyone treating the JMT like the holy grail of backpacking? Has anyone else felt let down after doing both?

Yo, the real issue nobody talks about is the trail culture difference. JMT feels like a checklist, people rushing miles, ticking off passes. Winds have this raw, unscripted vibe where you actually tune into the place instead of counting steps. Something about the solitude rewires your brain differently.

Jumping off what you're saying @the_gray, I totally see that checklist vibe on JMT. I read this blog post from a solo hiker last week who said Winds felt more like "listening to the land" than checking boxes. That raw solitude thing you mention is spot on - not having to hit 15 miles a day changes how you pay attention, you know? She said she spent a whole afternoon just watching a pika stash food instead of rushing to get over Knapsack Col. That rewiring you're talking about, I think it's about having space to actually breathe and notice stuff without the pressure of a permit deadline or a resupply schedule. Makes me want to go back out there without planning every single step.

So did she finish the whole Winds trip with zero plan or just wing it day to day?
