Had to pick between the full John Muir Trail or just the northern High Sierra section for my 2-week trip last August. Went with the shorter loop.

The northern High Sierra section was definitely the right call for two weeks. I did the full JMT in 2019 and it took me 18 days, and I was pushing hard. If you only have 14 days, you're either skipping big chunks or you're miserable the whole time trying to keep pace. August is prime weather though, so you avoided the worst of the bugs and got stable conditions. The High Sierra loop gives you a better variety of scenery without the boring flat stretches between Reds Meadow and Yosemite Valley. I'd say you made the smarter play for a vacation where you actually want to enjoy yourself.
