Drove 6 hours to hike the Eagles Nest Loop and the trail markers were completely gone

Got to the trailhead near Boone last Saturday and the first sign was already faded to nothing. By mile 3 I was guessing which way to go at every fork because the wooden posts had rotted out or fallen over. Had to pull up my phone maps three times just to stay on track. Anyone else run into abandoned trail systems that need serious maintenance?

bro that sucks so bad, i feel you. i did a section of the AT last fall and some of the old wooden blazes were completely gone, had to rely on cairns that were falling apart. it's honestly dangerous when trail markers disappear like that, especially in remote areas where cell service is spotty. the worst part is when you think you're following the right path and it just dead ends into a thicket. hope you at least got to enjoy the views at eagles nest, that area is usually gorgeous. we need more volunteers out there doing trail maintenance for real.

Sounds like Mother Nature played hide and seek with those trail markers and won.
